Born on October 15, 1968, in Niquero, Granma Province, Cuba, Reynerio Tamayo embarked on his artistic journey early in life. He completed his primary and secondary studies at the Elementary School of Art in Isla de la Juventud, Cuba, from 1980 to 1983. Subsequently, he pursued further studies at the National School of Fine Arts (ENA) in Havana until 1987, when he enrolled in the Higher Institute of Art (ISA) in Havana. He successfully completed his higher education in 1992.
Reynerio Tamayo stands as one of the most prominent and recognized artists in contemporary Cuban visual arts. He belongs to the renowned generation of the 90s and dedicated himself to painting as a creative medium. His body of work is characterized by the prominent use of irony and sarcasm as privileged discursive strategies. He is undoubtedly the leading humorist in current Cuban art, but his humor is far from lacking depth; it is a sharp and critical satire deeply rooted in the reality of the island and the daily lives of its inhabitants. As a postmodern artist, he employs pastiche along with Western artistic languages to engage in a subversive and questioning dialogue. Tamayo's creative expression is not limited to painting alone; he has also ventured into sculpture, design, and drawing. Considered one of the most prominent figures in contemporary Cuban art, he has successfully contributed to the legitimization of humor within artistic production.
Humor is the essence of his artistic discourse. Through parody, he fearlessly delves into social and cultural issues that interest him, such as consumerism, sexuality, gender, political cults, and art myths. His distinctiveness lies in his technical virtuosity and his ability to appropriate and subvert various styles and icons from the history of art. The artist adapts his palette to suit the demands of each painting, with colors ranging from pop art vibrancy to subdued tones and transparent effects, all depending on the concept of each piece. He draws inspiration from classical painting, avant-garde movements, pop culture, comics, and Japanese art, reinterpreting them to establish his unique aesthetic, which bears no resemblance to any other artist's signature. Tamayo's works are amalgamations of quotes recycled from universal art, presented with a sense of sympathy and dialogue.
Reynerio Tamayo has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions since 1987. His pieces have been exhibited in countries such as Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Spain, the United States, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Italy, Panama, Portugal, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela. He has been a part of prestigious national and international events such as TELARTE VII (Cuba), the Havana Biennale, the IV Salon of Contemporary Cuban Art (Cuba), ARCO International Contemporary Art Fair (Spain), the Valencia Art Fair (Spain), the VIII International Humor Biennial (Great Britain), the IX International Biennial of Humor and Satire in Art (Gabrovo, Bulgaria), and the Florence Art Fair (Italy).
